Lagos salutes the Supreme Court’s Lottery Regulatory Verdict

LAGOS STATE

The Supreme Court’s historic ruling in Suit No. SC/1/2008 between the Attorney-General of Lagos State & Ors and the Attorney-General of the Federation & Ors has been applauded by the Lagos State Government.
The decision declares the National Lottery Act to be unconstitutional and upholds state governments’ constitutional right to control lotteries and gaming operations inside their respective jurisdictions.

Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, said in a statement yesterday that the ruling was a historic win for federalism, the rule of law, and state constitutional rights.

“The Supreme Court’s ruling is a major confirmation that lottery and gaming regulation is a residual issue that belongs to state governments, the statement continued. By giving states the authority to determine their own course for efficient regulation, this ruling upholds the fundamentals of true federalism.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s beliefs about the country’s pursuit of real federalism are validated by the ruling. It is pleasing to observe that the fight for reorganization he spearheaded is materializing under this administration. This ruling is a worthy homage to his forward-thinking and imaginative leadership.

“The conviction of his successor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, who took the conventional route Asiwaju Tinubu had mapped out to test controversial constitutional questions in court, is also deserving of praise. The nation has experienced yet another dawn of light as a result of Mr. Fashola’s bravery in pursuing the lawsuit.

Kudos also go to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, whose dedication to protecting the rights of Lagosians and enforcing the law has been essential in achieving this result.
“Without the vision and support of Mr. Governor, whose dedication to integrity in governance has established a standard for true federalism, this result would not have been achievable.

The Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) is still the only organization in the state that regulates gaming and lotteries. It will keep making sure that gaming operations are carried out responsibly, openly, and in accordance with global best practices.
“The Lagos State Government advises unlicensed and unlawful lottery and gaming operators to apply for regularization with the LSLGA or risk legal action.
“The government will protect citizens from the negative impacts of uncontrolled gaming activities and create an environment that is favorable for legal operators.

Lagos is still dedicated to fostering an atmosphere that is conducive to business for authorized operators.
The Lagos State Government is still dedicated to making sure the gaming industry supports the state’s economic expansion and the well-being of its people.
