DOCUMENT ATTESTATION FROM MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

DOCUMENT ATTESTATION IN NIGERIA

The general procedure to legalize document in Nigeria involves three main steps. The first step is to notarize the document sought to be legalized; the second step is the document attestation from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the last step is to take the authenticated document to the relevant embassy for legalization.

The attestation of a document by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) is required before any document originated in Nigeria can be tendered or used for any official purposes overseas. Some countries may demand that such documents be legalized at their embassy, but it is not all authenticated documents that require legalization.

However, some documents may require additional steps before they can be authenticated at the Foreign Affairs Ministry.  For instance, with regards to the examination result, in other to legalize such a document, it must first be validated by the Ministry of Education before the authentication process at MFA, follows by legalization if required. And for a Marriage Certificate to be authenticated, the Certified True Copy of the marriage certificate must first be obtained from the Marriage Registry and notarized before it can be authenticated or attested by the MFA
