Sheridan was granted bail, under restrictive conditions, on Dec. 23.

Brant Burke, also of Killarney, was found dead on a trail in the Point Grondine reserve off Highway 637 on Oct. 25. Following an investigation by Wiikwemkoong Tribal Police, the OPP and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Kerry Burke and Sheridan were arrested on Nov. 24 and 25, respectively.

Gun violence also rocked Manitoulin Island in November, when Marc Hovingh, a provincial constable with 28 years in the OPP, was shot and killed while responding to a property dispute near Gore Bay on Nov. 19.

He was 52.

Sixty-year-old Gary Brohman, from Gore Bay, was also shot and killed in the incident, an investigation into which ongoing, led by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit and with assistance from the Greater Sudbury Police.

Hovingh’s death prompted an outpouring of grief, as well as several tributes to the longtime officer.

His family — wife Lianne and children Laura, Nathan, Elena and Sarah — gathered with loved ones, police and provincial dignitaries at Manitoulin Secondary School in M’Chigeeng on Nov. 28, for a service to honour Marc Hovingh, his life and his contributions to his police service and community.

The event was by invitation only, due to COVID-19 restrictions, but was streamed live online and followed by a procession from M’Chigeeng to Hilly Grove Cemetery, just outside of Manitowaning, where Marc was interred.

Much less grim, and indeed, quite welcome for city officials and supporters of the planned Kingsway Entertainment District, were a series of victories that should clear the way for the project to proceed.
